What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck, also called Abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at removing excess skin or ‘flab’ from the abdominal area, and tightening the abdominal muscles. It is most frequently performed post-pregnancies and post-large weight loss which has also entailed muscle loss and laxity.
Tell me about tummy tuck vs liposuction?
A tummy tuck is a procedure for individuals who need to firm and tone up their abdominal muscles, and have exhausted all their options. This is an invasive surgical procedure; those who elect to have it ought to take the time to educate themselves before making a final decision. A common occurrence is patient confusion between liposuction and tummy tuck, for example.
A tummy tuck is a very different procedure to liposuction and Dr. Prendergast will assess your suitability during the consultation. The tummy tuck procedure:
- Removes loose skin
- Removes stretch marks
- Tightens the abdominal wall
- Is not for major body fat reduction
- Restricts your lifting ability post-surgery
Whereas Vaser liposuction:
- Does not remove problematic loose skin
- Does not tighten the abdominal wall to the same degree
- Can remove significant volume of body fat
- Rarely limited exercise options post-surgery
What does the procedure involve?
A full tummy tuck requires no general anesthetic at Venus Medical. With local anaesthetic, a horizontal incision is made between the pubic hairline and belly button. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the amount of excess skin. Once the abdominal skin is lifted, the underlying weakened abdominal muscles are repaired. Sutures secure the new positioning of the skin. The actual extent of surgery will depend on the amount of excess skin and the laxity of the abdominal muscles. The procedure is highly individual and is certainly not associated with a ‘one size fit all’ approach.
What is the downtime?
There is an appreciable amount of recovery time needed following a tummy tuck. Dr. Prendergast will be able to advise you regarding this. Any kind of strenuous physical activity is prohibited and this advice is valid for at least for six months after the surgical procedure. In time, you will make a full recovery.
