NOSE (RHINOPLASTY)

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is any surgery to the nose, ranging from cosmetic enhancement to functional surgery to the nasal passages. Nose surgery is a complex operation. It requires three-dimensional artistic skills as well as medical and technical expertise.

Indications for Rhinoplasty

The common indications for Rhinoplasty are:

  • Nasal Deformities which may be congenital or acquired after any injury or insult.
  • Nasal airway obstruction causing breathing problems.
  • A nose that is dissatisfying to the patient.

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed to reshape or resize the nose. Dr. Malcolm Paul performs the surgery under local anaesthesia with sedatives, so patients are awake and calm throughout. It usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The surgery is performed by making an incision inside the nose or across the skin separating the nostrils (septum). Without making any exterior incisions, the surgeon reaches bone and cartilage located under the skin. Dr. Paul then trims the nose with special instruments to give the nose a desired size or shape. In complex cases where deeper modifications are required, the procedure is performed by making a little cut across the columella to reach the bone. This modifies the shape and width of the nostrils.

What is recovery like?

You can resume your usual routine the day after the operation although swelling and discoloration under the eyes usually takes five to 10 days to disappear. Some patients, however, don’t show discoloration.

It is vitally important that you follow all patient care instructions provided by your surgeon. We will also provide detailed instructions about the normal symptoms you will experience and any potential signs of complications. It is important to realize that the amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among individuals. You will need to wait for several weeks before you can engage in exercise. Surgical packing which ensures maintenance of the new shape and contours will be removed within seven days. The dressings and supportive splint will be removed within the first ten days post-operation.
