BLEPHAROPLASTY – EYELID & EYE BAG SURGERY

The skin around the eyes can become loose and wrinkled, start to sag, and look tired. These signs occur due to normal aging, but are often hereditary. Eye bag removal and eyelid lift surgery help to restore a lasting, youthful look. Surgery removes the excess skin and fatty tissue that forms a hood over the eye. This makes the eyes look more open and brighter. A lower lid blepharoplasty involves surgically removing protruding fat or skin that forms the bags under the eyes. Blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia, allowing a quick recovery.

Key information for candidates to consider:

  • These are two of the most popular procedures for women and men to reverse the sign of aging.
  • The upper and lower lids can be operated on either together or separately
  • The surgery usually takes between 45 minutes to 2 hours
  • The incisions are hidden by placing them either in the eyelid crease or behind the eyelid, so nobody will be able to tell you had surgery
  • Stitches are normally removed 4 to 6 days after surgery.
  • Most people return to work 7 days after their procedure.

UPPER EYELID SURGERY

Eyelid lift surgery is done to correct sagging or drooping upper eyelid skin (dermatochalasis). The surgery is called upper lid blepharoplasty.

An eyelid lift, or upper lid blepharoplasty, is done while you are awake using local anaesthetic. This is very beneficial because it allows you to recovery very speedily as well as avoid any risks of general anaesthesia. The procedure is performed as follows:

  • You are given medicine to help you relax.
  • The surgeon injects numbing medicine around the eye so you do not feel pain during the surgery.
  • The surgeon makes tiny cuts (incisions) into the natural creases or folds of the eyelids.
  • Loose skin and sometimes muscle and protruding fat tissue are removed.
  • At the end of surgery, the incisions are closed with stitches.
  • The incision is hidden in the natural crease line that occurs about 8mm above the eyelashes.
  • The incision might extend into the crow’s feet or laughter lines at the outer corners of your eyes if drooping skin in this area is to be removed
  • The incisions will then be closed with very fine sutures

LOWER EYELID SURGERY

Lower eyelid surgery is also performed under local anaesthesia only, avoiding risks of general anaesthesia.

  • The incision is often placed on the inside of the lower eyelid, so the bulging fat pads can be removed without any visible incisions
  • If there is crepy, loose skin that needs to be removed, an incision usually starts at the outer margin of the eyelashes.
  • Overlapping skin is removed.
  • Again the incisions are then closed with very fine sutures.

What is the downtime associated with blepharoplasty?

Some bruising and swelling is normal following a blepharoplasty. A full explanation of the procedure, and potential risks versus benefits of surgery are explained during an assessment and consultation. You can go home accompanied the day of surgery.

The more bright-eyed, rested and youthful look usually lasts for many years. These dramatic benefits are considered permanent by many patients who have successfully undergone blepharoplasty.

If you are interested in our blepharoplasty procedure, you may want to consider facial volume restoration, and a face/necklift.

Non surgical lifting procedures include Ultherapy, One-Stitch and similar thread lifts, and Vitality Lift.
